All I can think after reading that is...WHEW!!! Now I am certain you understand when I say these same years for me with Kristen, Stephen and Josh were a BLUR of exhaustion. I love how you savor the special moments, and thanks to technology, have it cataloged to share with them when they are older.

First off, I have to say that the math problem to verify that I am not a computer really stummped me today, _*5=40. Sigh, time for a nap. Fortunatley I got it eventually as you can see by this comment! :) Tracey thought I was joking, -no today I'm just stupid. The point I wanted to make was that I love this post. TRU definitley vomited in my house too as did American Girl Place. But my girls just love playing on the sand at the beach or with a few plastic animals out in the grass. but in the end I'm happier that they can find enjoyment this way anyhow, I think it's a good sign that they can use their imaginations this way. Also I'm looking forward to your Teenage Dork post! I LOVEEEEEE your stories :)

Good intentions. I had them too and can identify completely. I got so sick of all the toys that for my daughter's birthday we had a book themed party and requested books only as presents. I'm sure that won't stop the grandparents from buying her more toys, but it sure was nice to see all those books.

I am thrilled you have so many memories to recant. I think as the years progress my memories dim, good and bad. My best memories are of my childhood friends riding our ponies in the fields and the woods. My Mom had my Dad erect a dinner bell so she could call me home no matter where we wandered on those ponies. It stands in the front yard still, as a reminder of my childhood. It is my hope that we hold onto some of the simple pleasures afforded by those memories, and that we somehow pass them onto our children and grand-children even though the settings change.

I grew up the same way. We lived in the suburbs, but had a large (unfenced) backyard and plenty of greenspace in the neighborhood to play in--always unsupervised, of course! It also wasn't a big deal if we walked across neighbor's backyards or let the pets run loose--having kids running around and occasionally messing things up a bit or running in the middle of the street was just part of life and no one got bent out of shape about it. I actually had video games, but rarely played them. We had satellite TV but we never even thought about getting together to "play" by watching TV!

The cost of housing, insurance, food, and so many other things has increased so much from when I was young (in the 1980s). There still are some areas in my town where kids can run around the neighborhood safely, but these areas are outside of the price range of most people except for the very few.
